Today is the 28th anniversary of the launch of the AS400.
You can watch a video of the launch announcement here.
Tonight I will be raising a glass of my favorite beverage to wish the AS400 and its descendents, up to the IBM i, a happy birthday!
You can also learn what your PC would have been like at the time of the launch here.
And the family tree that took the AS400 and evolved to became the IBM i here.
I remember installing a new IBM AS/400 Model B70 to replace an "old" System/38 back in 1990. Wow, that was such an improvement in speed and it was so easy to migrate to it as well. To IBM: Nice job on the entire development of the System/38 to IBMi !!! All those old RPG programs still run on the IBMi today. What operating system can say that?
ReplyDeleteI started my career in 1990 as weekend AS400 S/38 operator while attending college. Today, I write sick rpgiv code that looks more like c than the rpg/400 code I wrote in the early '90s.
ReplyDeleteHelp me I am addicted to pointers and the %alloc bif.
My beginnings date back to 1992 when I met As / 400 and it is true, since then to date there are still companies that are still betting on Iseries now where the security and handling of data are still under the same standards .. never hacked
