I have always found New Years exciting, a new year is ahead of me that will be full of exciting new things and adventures. It is also the chance to bid farewell to the old year, and revisit its highlights.
2014 was an exciting year in the IBM i world with the following:
- April 2014 – Release of Technical Refresh 8, TR8, for 7.1
- April 2014 – Announcement of new a release, 7.2
- April 2014 – Announcement of the new Power8 servers
- October 2014 – Release of TR9 for 7.1 and TR1 for 7.2
This sets a high bar for 2015 to match. I am sure we will see a couple of Technical Refreshes being released in the next 12 months, I am excited to learn what they would contain.
Other anniversaries and events in 2015 are:
- 27th anniversary of the launch of the AS400, distinguished forerunner of the PowerSystems and IBM i
- 56th anniversary of RPG
- 2nd anniversary of this blog
- End of support for IBM i 6.1, September 30 2015
So raise a glass of your favorite beverage to the IBM i and give thanks to IBM and everyone else in the IBM i community for 2014, and share my excitement for what 2015 will bring.
